In celebration of Volunteer Week, the spotlight is on our volunteers, who share in their own words what volunteering at McCormick Home and McCormick Dementia Services means to them.
āI have been volunteering since January. However, each week with the residents and staff here have transformed my outlook on the level of care that can be provided for a dignified life. I feel a shift within me moving from a space of apprehension to one of peace, joy and energy about my own life. Every week I walk away with so much more than what I have given. Thank you for the opportunity.ā

āI have had the pleasure and good fortune to volunteer as a one-on-one visitor for the last 15 years. I enjoy visiting with a number of the residents and feel uplifted and energized when I stop by to hopefully brighten their day. I have met so many great people over the years and have enjoyed all of my experiences. I hope that they have felt the same way. I will continue to be there for them as long as I am able. The bottom line is that this volunteer activity is the highlight of my week.ā

āI volunteer because itās my way of giving back.Ā I love being able to put smiles on peopleās faces and maybe make their day a little better. Since I started at McCormick about 3 1/2 years ago I have met so many beautiful residents, and I enjoy my time with all of them. Hopefully, I will stay healthy enough to do this for some years to come. Thank you.ā

āThere are so many reasons why I love to volunteer.Ā Not everyone feels comfortable visiting people in long-term care facilities, and for me I feel like I naturally know how to interact and support the residents and staff. I love helping others and volunteering gives me a purpose. I feel like itās a calling to me, especially when it comes to helping residents who have dementia, as it takes a special skill. I feel like Iām blessed with that skill, so why not use it to help others!ā

āIāve volunteered at McCormick for almost three years (COVID being a disrupter). I love it when residents laugh or smile or see a response to a silly dance, a short conversation, holding hands or touching a shoulder. It makes me beyond happy.ā

āWe love to volunteer at McCormick Home! Giving back and showing our appreciation for the care our loved one has received and supportingĀ a compassionate and caring environment for the residents through life enrichment activities. It is always rewarding to make someoneās day just a little bit better ā and you get to do this on an on-going basis.Ā This transfers to making our own day just a little bit better, too!ā

āWhy do I volunteer? I volunteer as a way to help those who help us.ā
